The CASTLES OF PORTUGAL AND SPAIN TOUR is a unique trip for history and culture enthusiasts, a tour designed to satisfy our clients’ interest in the rich historical and cultural heritage of these two neighbouring countries. We will visit castles and fortifications, which are testimonies to a past where power and defence were essential; each one holds memories of battles, adventures and stories that have spanned the centuries.

On this tour, we’ll be telling many of these stories and recounting these battles.

We will also visit some very picturesque towns, villages and cities. As well as taking in endless, spectacular views, you will also see Europe’s largest artificial lake, which largely forms the border between these two countries. Despite the border, the people of Portugal and Spain have shared ties for centuries through historical, linguistic, cultural and economic links. 

So, by crossing the border, we’ll discover what these two countries have in common and what sets them apart. Visiting Spain is a wonderful bonus for anyone travelling in Portugal who hadn’t even realised this opportunity existed.

Itinerary for the Castles of Portugal and Spain Tour:
Day 1
- Departure from the Lisbon area
- Arraiolos - Visit to the castle, one of the few circular castles in the world
- Estremoz - Visit to the castle, where Queen Santa Isabel lived
- Vila Viçosa - Visit to the castle and the Ducal Palace, seat of the House of Braganza
- Elvas - The largest fortress city in the world - UNESCO World Heritage Site (Overnight stay)

Day 2
- Olivença – Visit this historic Portuguese town, the only place in Spain where you can see the Manueline style
- Alconchel – A Muslim castle conquered by the Portuguese and Spanish
